People start telling stories as soon as they can make sounds. Trying to understand the “whys” and “how comes” of the mysteries of Life seems to be as inherent to the human condition as breathing and gathering. Over the last 43 years, I’ve come to appreciate just how transformative and vital it is to have access to hearing stories and telling them.
If there were 3 things I’ve learned from master storytellers it’s this:
- Stay Humble-Life has a way of showing you that you don’t know as much as you think you do. The ones who retain their sense of humility are the ones who are teachable and can learn from challenges. It’s always the proud and overly-confident that end up falling on their keisters and being broken.
- Fall down 7 times, Get up 8. Develop resilience through coming back to your goals and dreams in spite of setbacks, losses, and heartbreaks. In a culture where fast solutions and instant gratification are held up as winning, persistence and resilience still produce the best results in the end. Don’t give up. Keep going, even if you can only take one step at a time.
- Express gratitude-There are always helpers that show up along Life’s adventures. They may be the guy at the gas station who helps you push your car off the street to the pump or the child that waves to you when you’re having a sad day. Whether big acts of kindness, or small, saying thank you or privately recognizing their gift in your heart is a profound way of allowing Life to continue supporting you and sweetening the experience. People who let themselves appreciate the everyday acts of grace, set themselves up to be further blessed.
Stories are our teachers, our guides, and our friends.
